(Extra)ordinary Whispers

Yesterday in Children’s Church our lesson was on Elijah and his time on a mountain with God:

“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the LORD told him. And as Elijah stood there, the LORD passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

1 kings 19: 11-13

This lesson has been on my mind since then, because it occurred to me that I need to stop waiting for God to speak to me in an earthquake or a fire or a windstorm.  Instead, I need to be listening for the quiet whisper.

So today I began to listen for God in the quiet of everyday life, in the drudgery of washing dishes and the monotony of folding laundry.  And I have begun to see that it is all worship in its own way.

A tree fell in the woods next to our house and the kids have been out to play on it several times with their dad.  They took me out to it today to show off their tree-climbing skills, and an ordinary afternoon in the woods turned into an (extra)ordinary moment, a time when God’s whispers were clear.

It was quiet and cool and beautiful with the sun setting in the background.

Where can you find God’s voice today? Let’s not wait around for a fire or earthquake to hear Him.

Good post, fellow #write31days writer! You would probably adore Emily P. Freeman’s new book “Simply Tuesday: Small Moment Living in a Fast Moving World.” It’s about finding the holiness in the small of the every day.I’m gobbling it up.
